A Tour of AtheneThe following is a quick tour of Athene, starting from installation to using the Athene desktop. If you have any questions after taking the tour, feel free to ask at contact@rocklyte.com. InstallationInstallation starts by inserting the Athene CDROM and booting your PC. After a short loading time your graphics card is automatically detected and you are presented with a menu screen (see image). From here you can go to the installation process to install Athene to your hard drive. Other options include repair, in case system files are ever deleted or broken; an option to launch the Athene desktop from CDROM; and an option to open a console in case you need to tinker with the system from the command line. Clicking the 'Install Athene' button will take you through a sequence of screens where you will be asked a number of questions that determine how Athene is installed to your PC. This starts with the selection of a partition to install Athene to, with your choice of file system. If you need to delete or create new partitions then you may do so from the partitioning screen. Once you have chosen the target partition, you need to set your login options - the default is for a graphical login so that Athene can automatically initialise your graphics card at boot-up. You are also required to set a password for the root (administrator) login to keep your system secure. The next step is to configure the boot loader if you have more than one operating system installed on your PC. If Athene is the only operating system on the machine then you can skip this section, or if you already have an installed boot loader then you can leave it as-is. Configuring the boot loader is simple - just tell it which partitions contain an operating system, as well as indicating the type of OS that is installed. Fine-tuning to the boot loader can be made following installation if you need to. At this point Athene has enough information to install to your hard disk and will copy itself across immediately. Once installed (the copy process takes only a few minutes) you reboot the machine and get to look at Athene for the first time. Copyright Rocklyte Ltd © 2002-2007. |
